The Impact of Burglary On Victims

Is burglary a crime against property, or a crime against the person? In the eyes of the law it’s the former. The result being that when a burglar is sentenced, their punishment is based upon the crime of taking somebody’s property – not the crime of invading a person’s home and destroying their sense of safety and security.
60% of burglary victims are emotionally affected by the event, an issue explored further in the infographic below. Sent to us by Amy on behalf of Stormclad, Amy is herself a victim of burglary who, despite being targeted nearly ten years ago, is still affected by the event.
Amy hopes that by increasing awareness of the fact burglary causes harm far beyond the loss of belongings, more help will become available to victims, and sentencing may eventually change to reflect the reality of the crime.
